Stepping into a new gym can be a little intimidating, especially at the beginning of the year! So many people, weird looking machines…it can all be a bit overwhelming. But don’t stress one minute ladies! Today, I’m going to show you how to navigate through the gym in the new year like a pro.
Get Comfortable with the Gym Layout
Every gym is a little different. You’ll feel much more confident when you are familiar with the gym set up and how to use the machines. Most gyms will give you a tour when you sign up, take advantage of this service! It will save you time in the long run. If you’ve been a member for awhile and still feel a little lost, don’t be shy! Ask one of the gym’s staff to point you in the right direction. They will be more than happy to help.
Timing Is Everything at the Gym In The New Year
Go to the gym at different times during the first couple weeks if you can. You might find that your gym is crickets after 6:30pm, but jam-packed at 6:30am. Ask the front desk employees when peak times are to get a good idea of times to avoid.
Be Flexible with the Method
You have your workout planned out. You get to the gym and everything is taken! Grrrr!! After the person using your equipment is finished with their set, politely ask how many more sets they have. If it’s only one, I typically wait to use the machine after they are done. But, if they just started, I move onto the next move on my plan. I can always circle back when the machine or rack is free. Or, I might get a little creative. For example, I might use a kettlebell instead of a dumbbell, or use the cable machine instead of the free weights.
Don’t Let Those Buff Guys Intimidate You!
Speaking of the free weights, don’t avoid this section of the gym! It can be intimidating to be the only women in the free weight area, but you need that resistance to build your beautiful muscles! Weights don’t need to be crazy heavy to be effective. They should be appropriate for YOUR goals though. P.S. Most guys, I have found, have no idea what they are doing anyways. Focus on YOU and your form. You totally can hang with the best of them in the free weight section at the gym! If you are uncomfortable, you can always grab the weights you need and do your moves in a more private area of the gym.
Check Out the Class Schedule
I love to take yoga classes on the weekend to switch things up. Many gyms have excellent classes that you should totally take advantage! A spin class for your cardio can be a great motivator to get that sweat in!
Meals On Deck
If you go from the gym straight to work or school, be sure to pack your meals with you! A #ladyboss is always prepared when it comes to food ;) Remember, your muscles need protein at most 30 minutes after your workout. So, have your meals ready to go!
